Troubadours...road stories and roadies

There will be great moments like this one with our

Pioneer Troubadours in a hotel room, where we will film others

Merle Haggard's bus in by the backstage door...

somewhere on that long and winding road.

Moments like this on Haggard's bus where

he and Buck were singing some songs to each

other while Merle waited to play with Bob Dylan

Running On Empty

Looking out at the road rushing under my wheels
Looking back at the years gone by like so many summer fields
In sixty-five I was seventeen and running up one-o-one
I don't know where I'm running now, I'm just running on

Running on - running on empty
Running on - running blind
Running on - running into the sun
But I'm running behind

Jackson Browne's top-selling album was the 1977’s seven-times platinum, life-on-the-road concept opus Running On Empty

We'll take you to other sound checks and this exciting part

of the shows that people never get to see...

Bob Neuwirth said about Rolling Thunder:

"It's going to b a new living room every night.
This is the first existential tour...it's a movie...

a closed set...it's rock 'n' roll heaven and it's
historic...It has been Ramblin' Jack's dream

a long time.  He is the one that taught us

all, and the dream is coming true..."

"The best thing I learned on that tour was

that is a small step from the lemo to the
gutter."  Kinky Freidman

We plan to take our viewer to the time the big trucks back up and the concert halls and venues,

where we will show the roadies as they unload the trucks and begin to build the elaborate stages,

set up the rigging, fly the sound and get ready for the sound check.  We will show how the catering

companies and the security companies get ready for the nights performance.  Then to the backstage

rooms where we see the band members and the stars get ready to entertain.

Then we will show the road crews breaking down the stage and lighting and loading on the trucks.

We will talk to the truck drivers as the prepare to hit the road and drive all night to make the next

city and the roadies begin to set up the stage for the next crew.  We will show the life on the rock

and roll busses as the acts then move themselves down the road to the next gig.

"What keeps us going and always will keep us going is getting out on the road.

That ole bus window and me are really good friends after 30 years."

                     John Anderson

"We're on the road babe!  It's heavy stuff.  New blood,

new places, new faces...we're getting our first taste of

what the future holds in store:  A steady diet of greasy

burgers  and cardboard in-flight dinners, burrowing

from one backstage bunker to another  through

interchangeable airport lounges and indistinguishable

hotel rooms.

LIVING WITH THE DEAD

THE LOAD-OUT
(by Jackson Browne & Bryan Garofalo)

Now the seats are all empty
Let the roadies take the stage
Pack it up and tear it down
They're the first to come and last to leave
Working for that minimum wage
They'll set it up in another town
Tonight the people were so fine
They waited there in line
And when they got up on their feet they

      made the show
And that was sweet--
But I can hear the sound
Of slamming doors and folding chairs
And that's a sound they'll never know

Now roll them cases out and lift them amps
Haul them trusses down and get 'em up

     them ramps
'Cause when it comes to moving me
You guys are the champs
But when that last guitar's been packed away
You know that I still want to play
So just make sure you got it all set to go
Before you come for my piano

"Yup, we're Roadies.  Just a Backstage

Pass away from being homeless."

"I was fascinated with the troubadour, the old oral tradition.... You go back and read classic history,

most of it comes from recited history ... [and] the traveling minstrels. The closest thing we have in

modern life is the wandering musician, the songwriter."   Michael Martin Murphey
